Velocity Selector (Crossed E and B Fields)

Theory

With $\vec{E}\perp \vec{B}$, the electric force $qE$ and the magnetic force $qvB$ oppose each other. Only particles with $v=E/B$ go straight through — here $0.2/0.05=4$ m/s.

What to observe

• The 4 m/s particle crosses in a straight line; the others are deflected.

Try this

• Change E or B and find the new selected speed.
