Charge Deflection Between Capacitor Plates

Theory

Between parallel plates the field is uniform: $E=\Delta V/d$. The force $F=qE$ is constant, so the charge follows a parabola, like a projectile: $y=\frac{1}{2}\frac{qE}{m}{t}^2$. This is how old CRT TVs steered the electron beam.

What to observe

• The + charge bends toward the − plate; the − charge toward the + plate; the neutral one goes straight.

Try this

• Increase E or reverse the field direction.
