Electric Dipole: Field Lines and Equipotentials

Theory

The field of a point charge is $E=k\frac{|q|}{r^2}$; lines leave positive charges and end on negative ones. The potential is $V=kq/r$, and the field points where $V$ decreases.

What to observe

• Lines never cross and are denser where the field is strong.

Try this

• In Electromag., switch to Electric potential or Field vectors.
• Drag the charges and watch the field rearrange.
• Flip the sign of one charge (q in the panel).
