Standing Waves on a String

Theory

On a string of length $L$ fixed at both ends, only waves with ${\lambda }_n=2L/n$ fit. The wave speed is $v=\sqrt{T/\mu }$ and the natural frequencies are $f_n=\frac{nv}{2L}$.

What to observe

• Nodes (N) do not move; antinodes (A) oscillate the most.

Try this

• Change the harmonic n from 1 to 6.
• Quadruple the tension: the frequency doubles.
