Mass–Spring Oscillator (Simple Harmonic Motion)

Theory

The spring exerts (Hooke’s law). The mass performs simple harmonic motion with period , independent of the amplitude. Energy oscillates between kinetic and elastic .

What to observe

  • m = 2 kg, k = 40 N/m → T ≈ 1.40 s (vertical and horizontal!).
  • The position graph is a sine wave.

Try this

  • Select the spring and change k or the damping.
  • Quadruple the mass: the period doubles.
